Obituary

Marjorie A. Merritt McClain, 82, of Neshannock Township, passed away the afternoon of March 30, 2016 at her residence. Born September 30, 1933 in New Castle, she was the daughter of Lloyd S. and Elva Sowash McKinnon. Marjorie was preceded in death on January 18, 1976 by her first husband, Kenneth D. Merritt, whom she married on February 28, 1953. She subsequently married Dale McClain on January 18, 1980 who survives at home. A 1951 graduate of New Castle High School, Marjorie went on to work in several departments of First National Bank of New Castle. She then took employment with Peoples Bank as an auditor for 18 years until her retirement in 1986. A lifelong member of Highland Presbyterian Church, she served as a past deacon and was a member of the a.o. Barnabas small group, the A.C. Circle and the Friendship Class. Active in the International Order of the Rainbow Girls, Marjorie was Past Mother Advisor and served on the Advisory Board and the New Castle Council of Rainbows. She was a member of Eastern Star #333 and Wimodausis. In her spare time, she was an avid reader. In addition to her husband Dale, she is survived by one daughter, Diane(Thomas) Gabriel of New Castle; one son, Gary D. (Melissa)Merritt of New Castle; two step-daughters, Kathy Popelka of Chesterland, Ohio and Paula Somers of Palos Heights, ILL; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and seven step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; one brother, Samuel McKinnon; one sister, Betty Morrison; and a step-son, Charles McClain. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Richard Kinney officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Highland Presbyterian Church, 708 Highland Avenue, New Castle, PA 16101 or to the City Rescue Mission, 319 S. Croton Avenue, New Castle, PA 16101.
