Mary Jane Sigler, 91, of New Castle, passed away February 26, 2013 at Jameson Hospital.Born June 18, 1921, in Bessemer, PA, she was a daughter of Charles B. and Lotta Spanglehour Nord. Preceding her in death in October, 1992, was her husband George S. Sigler, whom she married February 8, 1953. She was a graduate of Lowellville High School and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mary Jane was a police officer and sergeant for the New Castle City Police Department for 38 years. This is where she would come to meet her husband George when on the police force. She was the cities first female uniformed officer. Among her many interests, she enjoyed sewing and knitting. She also loved fashion and ladies coutere and was a former licensed hair stylist. She was a member of Temple Hadar Israel, where she was involved in the Temple Hadar Israel Sisterhood. Survivors include her twin children, Bruce C. Sigler and Bette S. (William) Keighley, all of New Castle; a sister, Louella Schlosser of Poland, OH; two grandchildren, Aaron (Marya) Keighley and April (Bryan) Smith; one great grandchild, Aiden J. Smith; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Carl B. and Eldred Nord; and five sisters, Phoebe Nord, Lois Bair, Arley Ann Nord, Marjorie Keane and Dorothy St. Clair. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2013, from 10:00 - 12:00 at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral service will immediately follow visitation at 12:00 Thursday, February 28, 2013, at the funeral home. Rabbi Martin Shorr will officiate. Burial will be in Temple Hadar Israel cemetery.
