Michael L. McBurney of Hickory Township went to be with his Lord Monday evening, June 8, 2020 at UPMC Jameson.
He was born in New Castle on January 9, 1942 to William Craig and Jane (Leicht) McBurney.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Kay (Smith) McBurney whom he married on October 14, 1989. Also surviving is Nora, mother of son William (Lynn) McBurney, son Scott (Michelle) McBurney and daughter Jane (Dick) Carberry. Pat, mother of daughter Abigail McBurney and son Seth (Candace) McBurney. Stepson Lon Shreve; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sister Judith McBurney Richards and brother Peter N. (Kris) McBurney.
He attended church at Barnstone Ministries and Family Worship Center.
Michael attended Hickory Heights and Neshannock schools. He was the first Lancer at Neshannock with his horse "Sparky".
He was an Eagle Scout and attended Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
He attended Youngstown State University and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America.
He had his own electrical business, taught at the New Castle School of Trades and retired from the 712 Electrical Union.
He was ordained through the Evangelical Ministers Alliance in Mercer. He had done nursing home ministry and Bible studies at Mercer State Prison. He had taken several correspondent Bible classes. He made four trips to help with Katrina clean up and two trips to Haiti. After seeing a bad accident in Haiti, he became an E.M.T.
He was a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association and current chaplain.
His favorite past times were motorcycles, hunting at Dave's camp, bowling and his horses.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Timothy McBurney; and stepson Keith Shreve.
Michael said the hardest thing he ever did was go through his bout with pneumonia recently. His medical staff may feel the same way in dealing with him. His wife Janice wishes to express her deepest appreciation for each one of them.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 12, from 1:00 to 4:00 at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.
A funeral service will take place Friday at 4:00 pm with friend, pastor and prison partner, Rev. Pete Squillo officiating.
Interment will be in Mt. Hermon Cemetery.
