Robert C. Pontius, 87, of Hickory Township, passed away the afternoon of December 7, 2017 at Shenango on the Green in New Wilmington. Born March 18, 1930 in New Castle, he was the son of John Pontius and Ruth Gormley Pontius Gaiser and step-son of Harold Gaiser. He was preceded in death on September 10, 2001 by his loving wife of 46 years, Frances M. Bunny Braykovich Pontius, whom he married January 8, 1955. Bob was a Korean War veteran, serving from December 1952 to January 1953. He was employed with New Castle Refractories as a foreman until his retirement. An avid golfer and bowler, Bob participated in several leagues including Green Meadows and Castle Hills golf leagues as well as the Colonial Lanes Monday night league. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of Paws and Taws square dancing group. He was a life-long fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. His greatest joy was watching his grandchildren participate in sporting events. Bob was an active member of Eastbrook United Methodist Church. He is survived by two daughters, Karen (Douglas) Doran of Mooresville, NC and Pamela Myers of Matthews, NC; three sons, Roger (Karen) Pontius of Columbus, OH, Brian (Sue) Pontius of New Castle and Robert (Beth) Pontius of New Wilmington; one brother, Kenneth Gaiser of Jamestown, NY; one sister, Janet Henderson of Jamestown, NY; 12 grandchildren, Shari, Andrew, Jamie, Keith, Slavi, Stoyan, Stefan and Robert Pontius, Stephen and Kevin Doran, Sean and Kyle Myers; and 4 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, step-father, and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard C. Pontius and William Pontius. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, December 10, at 4:00 pm with a gathering period from 3:00-4:00 pm at Eastbrook United Methodist Church, 2412 Eastbrook Road, New Castle with the Rev. Loren McQueen officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eastbrook United Methodist Church or Kindred Hospice.
