Robert Hugo Carlson, 88 of New Wilmington formerly of Neshannock Township died at the Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care Center on August 22, 2015. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, the former Martha Elizabeth Harris on January 13, 2014.
Mr. Carlson was born February 1, 1927 in Forty Fort, PA to Marie and Victor E. Carlson. Following his graduation from Kingston High School, he attended the University of Pennsylvania where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. At Penn, Mr. Carlson played varsity basketball, was elected permanent Class President, and received the Spoon Award signifying first honors among senior men. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of WWII.
Mr. Carlson had a 41-year career at Universal-Rundle Corporation and retired in 1990 as President and Chief Executive Officer. He served on the boards of St. Francis Hospital, Pennsylvania Power Company, Ohio Edison, and First Federal Savings and Loan. He served the community as President of: the Neshannock Township School Board, the New Castle YMCA, the Greater New Castle Chamber of Commerce, and the United Way. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he taught Sunday School and served on the Vestry.
Mr. Carlson enjoyed golf and was an avid runner with a consecutive-days running streak that lasted 34 years.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Victor and William. He is survived by a sister, Dorothy Albee in Sun City, Florida, three children: Robert (Margaret) Carlson in Cheswick, PA, Stuart (Susan) Carlson in Dallas, TX, and Carol (David) Vari in Millville, DE, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
