Obituary

Thelma G. Shafer, 83, of Edinburg, passed away peacefully at her residence on Saturday, March 10, 2018 after a courageous battle with lung cancer, surrounded by her family. Thelma was born on July 2, 1934 to the late Carl and Cora (Martin) Heath. She married Robert L. Shafer, Sr. on August 9, 1958. Thelma and Bob were blessed with 59 years of marriage. Thelma was a member of Edinburg Christian Church where she served as Deaconess. Thelma attended Union Area School. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Thelma enjoyed bowling, ceramic painting, playing cards, camping, gardening, and had a true talent for growing beautiful flower gardens and hanging plants. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, David (Rose )Davis of Edinburg, Rodney (Julie) Davis, Sr. of Pulaski, and Robert (Joyce) Shafer, Jr. of Pulaski; a sister, Marilyn Langford of Boardman, OH and brother, Larry (Mary) Heath of The Villages, FL; grandchildren, Kimberly Davis, Jamie Davis, Bobbie Jean Davis, Dena (Joe) Wagner, Rodney (Kelly) Davis, Jr., Carrie (John) Hollis and Todd Shafer; ten great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Thelma will be especially missed by those who called her Gram or Grandma. She made every grandchild feel special and loved. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl and Robert Heath and one sister, Evelyn Rotar. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 13, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. Additional visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, at Edinburg Christian Church, Clay Street, Edinburg, PA. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. David Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made out to Edinburg Christian Church and mailed to Joanne Mellott, Treasurer, 111 Battery B Street, New Castle, PA 16102.
