William D. "Bookie" Book, 75, of Eastbrook Road, New Castle, passed away the afternoon of August 14, 2016 at his residence. Born on August 19, 1940 in Plain Grove, he was a son of James Leslie and Alice Mae Hamilton Book. On June 11, 1966 he married the former Mary Jean McKeown, who preceded him in death. William served his country in the US Army and then was employed as a meter reader for Penn Power. A member of the Paws-n-Taws Square Dancing Club and a volunteer firefighter with Hickory Township, he was also a lifetime member of the Coachman's Club. He enjoyed bowling and horseshoes, but he especially liked visiting and conversing with family, friends, and strangers alike. He attended St. John's Lutheran Church. Survivors include two daughters, Christine (Dan) Ferrell and Jennifer Davis of New Castle; three sons, Donald (Michele) Book and Lawrence Book of Eastbrook and Bruce (Vaitupu) Book of Plain Grove; three brothers, Jim Book of Michigan, John Book of New Bedford, and Dale Book of Kentucky; four sisters, Edie Spence of Jackson Center, PA, Evie Book and Wanda Patterson of Grove City, and Eleanor Christy of Mercer; and nine grandchildren. Besides his parents and wife, William is preceded in death by one brother, Jess Book; and two sisters, Mary Ann Book and Betty Dennison. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 and Thursday from 10 to 11 at R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will immediately follow visitation on Thursday at 11 AM at the funeral home with Rev. David Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Plain Grove (North) Cemetery.
