Alexander Ganyu passed away, Saturday, March 19, at Jameson Hospital ending his valiant battle with cancer. He moved to New Caste, PA from Frostburg, MD, after retirement, to live closer to his daughter and enjoy his two grandchildren. Al was born to Alexander and Rose Gerbur Ganyu on May 28, 1923 in McKeesport, PA. His beloved parents and sister, Helen Noon, preceded him in passing. He earned degrees from California Teachers College and the University of Maryland. While teaching industrial arts at Valley High School in Lonaconing, MD, he married K. Phyllis Alexander. In addition to his wife, he leaves two children, Brian (Kathy) Ganyu of Gurnee, Ill, Corinn (Mike) Grossetti of New Castle, PA and two grandchildren, Jacob and Megan Grossetti. Al taught industrial arts for over 30 years, happy to turn students into wood-workers. One of his greatest joys was seeing their creations as adults, ranging from lamps to homes. During! WWII, he piloted B-17's, leading 35 missions over Germany and returning his crew and plane safely home to England after every mission. He eagerly talked to strangers and friends alike, as he knew no one as a true stranger. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 pm at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Rd. New Castle, PA 16105. A memorial service will be held immediately following visitation at the funeral home.
