Alvin Frederick Grimes, age 98, formerly of Masters Court NE, passed away April 22, 2020 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio following a brief illness. Born September 25, 1921, in New Castle, Pa., he was the son of Edward and Selma Snead Grimes. He was preceded in death in 2016 by his wife of 66 years, Gem Ann Pearsall Grimes, whom he married February 4, 1950. Alvin attended the New Castle public schools. During World War II, he served in the US Army Air Force's 8th Air Force, performing sheet metal repair on B-17 bombers at the 92nd and 482nd Bomb Group base at Alconbury, England. Following the war, he learned the carpentry trade and spent his career in residential and commercial construction, working primarily for Davis International in Youngstown, Oh. In retirement, he continued to pursue carpentry projects and returned to his hobby of building larger scale model airplanes from both balsawood and solid aluminum. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in New Castle, Pa. He is survived by one daughter, Ann P. (Dr. James) Brodell of Warren, Ohio; two sons, Allen F. (Diane) Grimes of North Andover, Mass. and Terry L. (Wendy) Grimes of Wampum, Pa; and four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kristofer, Dr. James, Jr., and Andrew. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters; Louise, Margaret Vati, and Dorothy Nixon; four brothers, Robert, Charles, Donald, and Clifford; one daughter, Martha; and one son, Richard. Alvin's family would like to extend a special thank you to the healthcare first responders from the Howland Fire Department and all physicians, nurses and support staff at Trumbull Memorial Hospital and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital.
