Obituary

Anthony David Aven, 62, of New Castle, passed away the morning of Feb. 9, 2012 at UPMC Montefiore, Pittsburgh.Born Oct. 5, 1949 in New Castle, he was the son of Antonio (Tony) and Amelia (Millie) DeFino Aven.Anthony married Kimberly Flamino on Sept. 20, 1980.He was the owner and president of Aven Fire Systems, Inc.Anthony graduated from New Castle High School in 1968 and attended Youngstown State University where he also played baseball as a pitcher and a shortstop.He was a tight end on the New Castle Hurricanes 1967 WPIAL Championship team. Anthony also played softball and was a shortstop for the The Brookline Young Men's Club, a semi-pro team, The Croton Dukes and the Iron Dukes.Anthony was the chairman and co-founder of the New Castle Hurricane Club and secretary/treasurer of Cray Youth and Family Services. He was a member of the National Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association, the National Fire Protection Association, the Eagles Club and a past member of the Wolves Club.Anthony was one of New Castle's most generous philanthropists. He was known for his endless support of local organizations and charities, including the New Castle Playhouse, United Way, YMCA, Lawrence County Historical Society and the Union Township Annual Balloon Quest. Anyone who has had the privilege of knowing Anthony was blessed with his kindness, gentle heart and unending generosity.He was an avid golfer and enjoyed golfing with friends at the New Castle Country Club, was an avid Steelers fan, and enjoyed traveling to Florida and Puerto Rico with his wife, Kim, family and friends.He is survived by his wife, Kim, a daughter, April Leigh Aven of New Castle; a son Anthony Francis Aven of New Castle; a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Kathy Aven of New Castle; two sisters, Rosemary Aven and her companion Ted Hasalak of West Pittsburg, and Maxine Aven Bright of New Castle.Anthony was preceded in death by his parents.Visitation will be Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, from 2-7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, from 11 a.m. till noon at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.Funeral services will be Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at Westminster College Chapel. Dean DeFino and David Frank will officiate.Memorial contributions may be made to the Red Hurricane Club, 10 E. Clayton St., New Castle, PA 16102-1823.
