Anthony E. Sorbo , 91, of Souderton, PA, passed into Glory the afternoon of October 21, 2019, in his home. Born on May 3, 1928 in New Castle, PA, the son of the late Andrew and Josephine Naples Sorbo. As a youth, Anthony, sensed God's call to missions and enrolled at Central Bible College to prepare for ministry. He graduated from CBC in May 1949 and married Clara Vassilion on August 13 of that same year. Together they pastored churches in Bangor and Landisburg, Pennsylvania. During this time two children, Keith and Karen, were born. The Sorbos originally applied to go to South India as missionaries, but their visas were denied. Instead they were asked to go to Indonesia to replace a missionary who had retired. Their acceptance marked the beginning of more than 40 years of ministry in that island nation. Arriving in May 1960, the Sorbos began their work on the islands of Ambon and Celebes, where Anthony taught in Bible schools. As time passed, Anthony became increasingly burdened by the lack of evangelism and discipleship materials in the Bahasa Indonesia language. In 1966 he was named director of publications for the Indonesia AG and established Golden Grain Press. Under his leadership this ministry grew to become one of the largest Christian publishers in that area of the world. In 1982 the Sorbos moved to Jakarta where Anthony served as national director of Global University correspondence education in Indonesia and Far East literature coordinator. His work expanded even further in the early 1990s when he and Clara were asked to lead translation efforts to make the Full Life Study Bible available in the Indonesian language. The Sorbos moved back to Ambon in April 1995 to oversee a major building project at the Bible school there. Less than two years later, on November 16, 1996, Clara went to be with the Lord. In 1998, Anthony married Angeline Hafner. He retired from full-time missionary service March 30, 1999, but he and Angeline continued to make short-term trips to Indonesia until 2005. Angeline went to be with the Lord in November 2018. Anthony is survived by son, Keith and daughter, Karen; step-daughters, Terry, Diane, Ruth and Stephanie; thirteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Adelaide Strayer, Ellen Aiello and brother, Joseph Sorbo. A viewing will be held on Saturday, October 26 from 2:30-3:15 PM at the Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home, Inc., 667 Harleysville Pike, Telford, PA 18969, where a funeral service will follow at 3:30 PM. A viewing will also be held on Monday, October 28, from 12-1 PM at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, PA 16105, interment will be Castleview Memorial Park, New Castle.
