Athena G. Liberatore, age 85 of New Castle, passed away the morning of February 11, 2019 at Avalon Place in New Castle. Born April 1, 1933 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late George and Stavroula (Papadakos) Giacumakis. She was married to her husband of 20 years, Galileo E. Liberatore, who preceded her in death on August 28, 1992. Mrs. Liberatore was a New Castle High School graduate. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Independent Church. Athena cherished the time that she spent with her family, including her beloved grandchildren. Athena is survived by three sons, Mark A. Liberatore of New Castle, PA, Matthew P. (Monica) Liberatore of Ellwood City, PA and Michael S. (Roseann) Liberatore of Virginia Beach, VA; one brother, Dr. George (Joan) Giacumakis, Jr. of Yorba Linda, CA; one sister, Sophia G. Bovard of Sharon, PA; and three grandchildren, Nikolas, Anthony and Lucy. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 17 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A service will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 18, with the Rev. Charles Fombelle, officiating.
