Attorney Donald J. Nicolls, age 90, of New Castle, PA, passed away the morning of June 6, 2018 at UPMC Jameson Hospital.
Born September 11, 1927 in Poland, Ohio, he was the son of Carl E. and Ethel Mae (McCoy) Nicolls.
He was preceded in death on August 3, 2016 by his beloved wife of 63 years, Beverly Jean (Nicodemus) Nicolls, whom he married March 22, 1953.
Don served his country in the US Army 1946-1947.
He earned his Law Degree from The Ohio State University where he also played football on the 1945 team and continued to be an avid Ohio State sports fan throughout his life. Attorney Nicolls practiced law for 65 years in New Castle with the law firm of Balph, Nicolls, Mitsos, Flannery & Clark until his retirement.
An active member of several organizations in the New Castle area, Don served on the New Castle Public Library board for over 60 years from 1955 until the present; the City Rescue Mission board for 30 years; and the Neshannock School Board, the Neshannock Park Commission, and the Camp LAMBEC Board.
Don loved to travel and enjoyed his frequent visits to the Grand Teton National Park. Among his other interests, he liked to play volleyball at the YMCA, and enjoyed photography, gardening, hiking, and whitewater rafting. He looked forward to hosting his annual New Years Eve Party at his house as well as the Nicolls family reunion and Turkey Bowl Game held the day after Thanksgiving.
A member of Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church, Don served on the Board of Sessions, taught Sunday school and was active in the Tri-M Sunday school class.
He is survived by his two daughters, Beth Nicolls of Cleveland, Ohio and Barbara Nicolls of New Castle; two sons, Bruce Nicolls (Cindy) of DuBois, PA and Dale Nicolls of Poland, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Mary Nicolls of Columbus, Ohio and Elece Ash of Lancaster, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Ian Nicolls of Denver, CO and Hillary (Jonathan) Wildt of Chicago, IL.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty (Donald) Grover and Ruth (John) Lewis; and three brothers, Bob (Mickey) Nicolls, Dave Nicolls, and Gene (Ellen) Nicolls.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 15, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle.
A funeral service will take place on Saturday, June 16, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Poland Riverside Cemetery.
