Obituary

Barbara J. Benson, 73, of Neshannock Township, passed away at her residence surrounded by her sons the night of October 23, 2018. Born December 21, 1944 in New Castle, she was the daughter of Frank P. and Dorothy (McClelland) Chapin. She was preceded in death on March 18, 1990 by her husband of 22 years, Donald E. Benson, Jr., whom she married on January 20, 1968. A graduate of Neshannock High School, Barbara received her Bachelors degree from Baldwin -Wallace College and awarded her Masters degree in Education from Penn State University and was a Home Economics teacher. In addition to her membership in the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and Delta Kappa Gamma, she was very active with Relay for Life and was a judge at the Lawrence County fair for over 30 years. She enjoyed sewing, crafting and needlework and being Nana to her grandchildren. Barbara was an active member of Highland Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon, taught Sunday school and was the Interim Director of Christian Education. She is survived by her three sons, Michael (Angelyn) Benson of Fredericksburg, VA, David (Vicky) Benson of Pittsburgh, and Rev. James (Katrina) Benson of Rock Island, IL; one sister, Maxine (William) Wilson of La Grange, KY; and six grandchildren, Maxwell, Ian, Cameron, Mabel, Cecilia and Enid. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 26 from 5:00 to 8:00 at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 708 Highland Avenue, New Castle, with the Rev. Richard Kinney officiating. Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to Highland Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society. Online condolences may be offered at www.cunninghamfh.com
