Bernard F. "Bernie" Thompson, 85, of Hunters Woods, passed away the afternoon of December 16, 2011 at Jameson Hospital.Born May 3, 1926 in New Castle, PA, he was a son of Ernest and Hazel Johns Thompson. Bernie has been married to Donabelle Saylor Thompson for over 67 years. He was a 1944 graduate of New Castle High School and served his country in the Navy during WWII on the U.S.S. Alabama from 1944 to 1946.Bernie was employed in sales with Universal Rundle for 38 years.He was a member of the New Castle Rotary Club #89 and a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church where he was an elder.Bernie enjoyed playing the piano, golfing, bowling and spending time with his grandchildren.In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Sherry Lanz of Shaker Heights, Ohio and Barbara and Gary Travis of Massilon, Ohio; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Bernard Jr. and Jane Thompson of Bainbridge Island, Washington and Thomas and Martha Thompson of Memphis, Tenn; 4 grandchildren, Graham Lanz, Amanda Simmons, Todd Travis and Cory Travis; four great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Jonathan, Addy and Cora.He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, Nora Pearl, Edna Attaway and Katherine.Visitation will be held on Sunda, Dec. 18, 2011, from 2:00-6:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.A funeral service will be held on Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Andrew Jillson will officiate. Burial will be in Castle View Gardens.The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform military rites.Memorial contributions may be made to Jameson Hospice of Lawrence County, 1211 Wilmington Road or Northminster Presbyterian Church, 2434 Wilmington Road, New Castle, PA 16105.
