Obituary

Burton W. McGowan, age 99, of Portersville, PA, passed away the morning of March 1, 2016 at the residence of his son. Born February 4, 1917 in Butler, Pa, he was a son of Roy P. and Elizabeth Agnes Scott McGowan, and the step-son of Stella Snyder McClure McGowan. He was preceded in death on August 10, 1985 by his first wife, Mary C. Harlan McGowan, whom he married June 18, 1946. He subsequently married Martha Harlan Fullwood McGowan, who passed away June 9, 2008. Burton was employed for 35 years with Columbia Gas Company as a backhoe operator until his retirement in 1982. Among his many interests were gardening, mowing his lawn and hunting, especially with his son, son-in-law, and his grandsons. He will be greatly missed by his faithful companion Butch, his beagle. He was a member of Mt. Hermon Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his son, James (Cindy) McGowan of Portersville; one daughter, Jean (Russell) McWilliams of Seneca, PA; 5 grandchildren, Jason (Tracy) McGowan, Joshua McGowan, Glenn (Veronica) McWilliams, James (Tara) McWilliams, and John McWilliams; 3 great-grandchildren, Austin McGowan, Loganne McGowan, and Weston McWilliams; 4 step-children, Jackie (Larry) Wigley of Wampum, Kathy Hooks, Norm (Judy) Fullwood and Tom (Mary Ann) Fullwood all of New Castle; a step-daughter-in-law, LeeAnn Fullwood of Hallam, PA; 11 step-grandchildren; 16 step-great grandchildren; 1 step-great-great-grandchild; and two nephews, Clark (Lorraine) Duncan of Cochranton, PA, and Perry (Bonnie) Duncan of Michigan. In addition to his parents and his two wives, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mabel Duncan; 2 twin brothers; and one step-son, Paul Fullwood. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will take place on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Ms. Marsha Parrish officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt.
