Obituary

Carl W. Richardson, 88, of New Castle, died the morning of September 13, 2010 in Jameson Memorial Hospital.Born August 6, 1922 in New Castle, he was a son of Edward and Zella Barnes Richardson Black. He was married to Kathryn F. Shaffer Richardson who preceded him in death on September 9, 2004. He later married Kay Phipps Burk on January 12, 2008. She survives in New Castle.A Sergeant in the U.S. Army, 24th Infantry Division, during WWII, he was the only survivor of Pearl Harbor in the city of New Castle. He served as a Sharp-Shooter, Forward Observer and Message Center Chief in seven major campaigns in the Asian/Pacific Theatres and Pearl Harbor. During that time he was a prize winning boxer in the Bantam weight class.Carl was employed at First Assembly of God as a caretaker; a storesman with Penn Power; a detail officer with B & R Lincoln/Mercury; a salesman with Country Belle Dairy Cooperative and J.R. Ricks Dairy; and a laborer with Youngstown Sheet and Tube.He was a member of First Assembly of God where he was an elder and a board member for twenty years.He was a member of the Teamsters and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren whom he truly loved.In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Betty-Kay (Frank) Geniviva of Ellwood City and Joanna R. (John) Cappabianco of New Castle; two sons, Grantley F. (Esther) Richardson of New Castle and Rev. Douglas L. (Cynthia) Richardson of Marlette, Michigan; three step children: Tracey (William) Wereb of West Middlesex, Doug (Shirley) Burk of Portersville and Chad Burk of New Castle; twenty one grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; one sister, Mildred (Millie) Anderson of Calif; and numerous nieces and nephews.In additon to his parents and first wife Kathryn of sixty years, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Vernon Edward, Ronald and Gerald Richardson; one sister, Leona Wilkins; a grandson, a granddaughter and a great grandson.Visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at First Assembly of God.A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at the church. Rev. Chad Stoecker will officiate. Burial will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens. Military Rites will be given by the New Castle Area Honor Guard.Memorial contributions may be made to First Assembly of God, 2021 Pulaski Road, New Castle, PA 16105.Arrangements are by the R.
