Carroll C. Byler, Jr., 95, of Neshannock Township, passed away the morning of May 2, 2013 at Jameson Hospital North. Born Jan. 5, 1918 in Elm Grove, WV, he was the son of Carroll C. Byler Sr. and Mary Reed Byler. Carroll married Jeanne R. Gill Byler on Sept. 7, 1940. They had been married for 72 years. A graduate of Grove City High School, he then attended Slippery Rock University. Carroll was an executive at Giant Eagle, retiring in 1981. While living in Glenshaw, PA from 1963-1989, he was a member of Glenshaw Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, deacon and trustee, belonged to bowling and golf leagues and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. After moving back to New Castle, he joined Highland Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon, and was a member of the Friendship Class and A. O. Barnabas Group. Carroll was a member of the New Castle Bridge Club, was an avid Steelers and Pitt fan, enjoyed golf, and flower gardening. A true gentleman, he was a compassionate and caring man. In addition to his wife, Jeanne, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and David Van Horn of New Castle; a daughter-in-law, Christine Byler of Atlanta, GA; a brother, Walter Byler of Erie; two grandchildren, Kristen Van Horn Tejada and her husband, Frank, and David Van Horn and his wife, Alycia; and three great grandchildren, Adam, Francisco, and Alex. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Robert C. Byler; and two brothers, Bill Byler and Richard Byler. Visitation will be Saturday, May 4, 2013, from 2-5 p.m. and Sunday, May 5, 2013, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Richard Kinney will officiate. Entombment will be at Castle View Gardens Mausoleum.
