Charlene Farris, 78, of 924 Maryland Avenue, New Castle, passed away peacefully at home with her loving children and grandchildren by her side on March 29th, 2014, after a short battle with cancer.Born June 2, 1935 in Pittsburgh, PA, Charlene was the daughter of Robert and Adaline Porter Prentice.She was married to Joseph Farris for 57 years, and he preceded her in death on September 12, 2011.Charlene's greatest joy in life was her children and grandchildren. She never missed an activity they were involved in- from school, to sports, to dance.Still working, Charlene was a legal secretary for 60 years for Atty. Robert D. George and the law firm of Luxenberg, Garbett, Kelly and George as well as being a favorite waitress at the Ladies of the Dukes restaurant for 30 years.Charlene was an active member of St. Elias Orthodox Church and a member of its Theotokos Society.She graduated from New Castle High School in 1952 and was a proud, lifelong New Castle Red Hurricanes basketball and football fan.Charlene had a passion for helping people and was well known for many, many cards she sent to family, friends and strangers for both happy and sad occasions.Charlene always looked forward to her Saturday morning "breakfast girls", dining at local restaurants. She also enjoyed her "club ladies," who met monthly for the past 60 years.She was a kind generous person who donated to many charitable organizations. She was always willing to help those in need.She is survived by a daughter, Debbi Cameron; a son Bobby Farris and companion Mary Ann Tofel; a daughter Cyndi (Johnny) Salzano. Seven grandsons, Justin Farris and fiancee' Rebecca; Jared Farris; Judd (Jessica) Farris; Kurt Cameron; Bryan Cameron; Chad Cameron; Jesse Salzano and one granddaughter, Jonalyn Salzano. Five great-grandchildren, Arianna, Kendra, Shaun, Kayla, and Joseph and her dog "Diesel". Charlene was also a loving sister-in-law, aunt, and friend to many.She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. with a service of Trisagion at 7:30 pm at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, and Wednesday, April 2, 2014, from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at the St. Elias Orthodox Church, 915 Lynn Street, New Castle.A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at the church and will be officiated by Father Kevin Gregory Long, along with The Very Reverend Richard Salley and Reverend Chris Davis.
