Charles A. Bud Dean, age 97, of Cochran Drive, passed away the morning of April 9, 2017 at The Grove at New Wilmington. Born October 8, 1919 in New Castle, he was the son of John William Dean and Elizabeth Richardson Dean Porter. He was preceded in death on February 7, 1997 by his first wife of 50 years, Gayle A. Love Dean, whom he married October 24, 1946. He subsequently married Mary L. Ludwig Rainey Dean on September 30, 2000. She survives at home. After his graduation from El Monte Union High School in California, Bud served his country in the Navy during WWII. As a member of the Amphibious Corps, he served on a LSM in the Pacific Theater. A Union Carpenter with Local #420, Mr. Dean was a home builder, specializing in construction framing. Among his many interests, Bud enjoyed sailing and even built a few sail boats himself. He also liked hunting and fishing and being active in the New Castle Playhouse. He was a member of the American Legion. An active member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Bud sang in the choir, served as a former Trustee, Sunday school teacher, and participated in several church functions. In addition to his wife Mary, he is survived by one son, Charles Tom (Jane A.) Dean of Volant; one daughter, Marsha (Ronald) Niemi of New Castle; 4 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Gayle; one brother, Chester Dean; and three sisters, Ruth Cleland, Eleanor Reed and Dorothy Kegarise. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral service will take place on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church, 805 E. Washington Street, New Castle, with the Rev. Wayne Schar officiating. Military rites will be performed by the New Castle Area Honor Guard. Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimers Association.
