Charles J. Gibas, 70, New Castle, passed away the afternoon of September 6, 2014 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.Born May 22, 1944 in Wellsville, Ohio, he was a son of Victor A. and Eileen R. Smith Gibas.He is survived by his wife, Sandy Davis Gibas, whom he married May 20, 1995.Graduating from New Castle High School in May, 1962, he went on to serve with the Navy until his honorable discharge on his 21st birthday. He later served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary as a division captain.Charles was the owner of State Service, an auto repair station. Prior, he was employed with Drespling and Duddy residential buildings, and was an assistant teacher with Ben Franklin Early Learning Center. He assisted with LCCAP in the senior program in the optical department.Charles loved the outdoors, spending his leisure time hunting, fishing, camping and boating. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren.He was a member of King's Chapel United Methodist Church.In addition to his wife Sandy, he is survived by two daughters, Cindy (John) Pappageorgen of Mississippi, and Kimber (Greg) Rice of New Castle; three sons, Mark Gibas of Monroeville, PA, Joseph (Holly) Gibas of Hubbard, Ohio, and Tim (Denise) Moore of New Castle; one brother, Thomas (Kathy) Gibas of Huntington, WV; one sister, Nancy Smith of New Wilmington, PA; five grandchildren, Erika Rosendale, Andrew Sankey, Maria Gibas, Hunter Moore, and Amanda Rosendale Craven; one great-grandchild, Kherington Fox; a niece, Jacquine Potter of Girard, Ohio; and his former wife, Margery Smith Gibas.Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.A funeral service will be held immediately following visitation Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at 8:00 pm at the funeral home and will be officiated by Pastor Bruce Gascoine of Christ Community Church in Butler.Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
