Charles M. "Chuck" Rhodes, Sr. 83, of 121 Baldwin Road, New Castle, passed away the night of October 6, 2014 at his residence.Born September 28, 1931 in New Castle, he was a son of Walter J. and Charlotte White Rhodes.He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Audreene Bevan Rhodes, whom he married May 3, 1958.Chuck was a graduate of Shenango High School in 1949 and Youngstown State in 1963 as Magna Cum Laude. In addition, Chuck furthered his education by attending Nabac School at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Oklahoma Lending School, and Columbia University Banking School. He served his country in the Navy from 1950 to 1954 in the Korean Theater of Operation. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Radioman, First Class. Chuck was the President and CEO of Citizens National Bank, retiring a short time later as Vice-President with Mellon Bank in 1986.Chuck was very active in several New Castle and Lawrence County civic activities. He was past director and treasurer of the Lawrence County Visiting Nurses Association; past treasurer and director of the Greater New Castle Association; past chairman of the business division for the Lawrence County Cancer Society campaign drive for funds; served as treasurer of the New Castle Parking Authority; served as director and a member of the executive committee of the Lawrence County Chapter of the American Red Cross; and served as director and member of the executive committee of the Lawrence County United Way.A member of Third Presbyterian Church, he served as an Elder and a member of the choir.In his younger years he was an avid baseball player, also enjoying hunting and fishing. Later in life, Chuck valued time spent with his family, traveling, and making home improvements.In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Charles "Rusty" Rhodes, Jr. and wife Susan of Mars, Pa, Douglas B. Rhodes and wife Colleen of New Castle, and James J. Rhodes and wife Nancy of Mars, Pa; one sister, Ida May Lamm of New Castle; and six grandchildren, Michael Barron, Marisa Barron, Megan Barron, Paige Rhodes, Alexander Rhodes, and Andria Rhodes.He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Walter J. Rhodes, Jr.; and two sisters, Dolores Ward and June Anderson.Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2014, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. and Friday, October 10, 2014, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle.A funeral service will be held Friday, October 10, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home and will be officiated by Rev. Michael Spicuzza.Military rites will be performed by the New Castle Area Honor Guard.Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made to Third Presbyterian Church, 1315 E.
