Charles William "Chuck" Tanner of New Castle, PA passed away the afternoon of February 11, 2011 at Jameson Care Center.He was born on the Fourth of July, 1928 in New Castle to Anna Marie Baka and Charles Tanner Sr.He attended Shenango High School where he excelled in football, basketball, track and field, and most notably, baseball.After high school, Chuck followed his dream into professional baseball. As a player, Chuck accomplished the ultimate highlight: On the very first pitch of his very first major league at bat, he hit a home run. He continued with an incredible work ethic on the field over eight seasons and with four different major league teams.Chuck's professional career may best be known, however, by his feats as a manager. Leading four different teams in his career, he was awarded the Manager of the Year award in 1972. Chuck reached the pinnacle of his sport in 1979. An eternal optimistic attitude and pure love for the game enabled him to help lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a World Series Championship. He carried with him a mental toughness and hard working philosophy that often filtered throughout his teams.After his managing career ended, Chuck stayed deeply involved in the game. Working as a scout for the Milwaukee Brewers and Cleveland Indians eventually led Chuck home to Pittsburgh, where in 2006 he threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the All Star Game. In 2007, Chuck became Senior Advisor of the Pittsburgh Pirates.Chuck's true and genuine character stayed with him after the spotlight of the game was over. He possessed incredible courage, compassion, and devotion to his wife, (Babs), to whom he provided constant care and attention during the final years of her life. His incredible generosity and positive spirit has spread not only to his family, but to anyone in the community that has come in contact with him. Chuck would always take or make the time to talk, acknowledge, and bring smiles to the faces of everyone in his personal and professional life. He possessed a magnetic personality and a genuine heart, proven by the countless memories he will leave in the lives of those he touched.He is survived by brothers William and Robert; sons Mark, Gary, Brent, and Bruce; and eleven grandchildren.Public visitation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, from 4:00-9:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle.Memorial contributions may be made to: We Are Family Fund, c/o Pirates Charities, 115 Federal Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.
