David Nies, 77, of Meadowview Blvd., New Castle passed away the morning of January 7, 2015 at Jameson Hospital. Born March 26, 1937 in Deadwood, South Dakota, he was the son of Otto and Mildred Lilyblade Nies. A 1955 graduate of Wamego Rural High School, he attended Kansas State University. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bonneta Joyce Keim Nies, whom he married in 1958. In 1966 David served in the Army with the rank of E-6. In 1972 he became a Warrant Officer, including three tours in Germany and a terminal assignment at Fort Sill where he served in the Field Artillery Proponency Office. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal; Good Conduct Medal, 2nd Award; National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon, 3rd Award; Meritorious Service Medal; and Expert Rifle (M-16). David retired from active service in November 1985 with 20 years of active service. After his retirement he worked for a civilian contractor, training Pershine II 21G students. He also worked for Civil Service as a Test and Evaluation Officer for the TEXCOM Fire Support Test Directorate. He retired from Civil Service in February, 1997. He was recognized for 30 years of service for the Federal Government. David was an elder and trustee for St. Johns Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Pershing Professionals Association, the American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Dennis Nies of Marietta, CA, Douglas Nies of Lawton, OK, and Jerry Nies of Atlanta, GA; and two daughters, Pamela Cross of Kennet Square, PA, and Angela Walters of New Castle, PA; 16 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his Aunt Louise Nies Schwandt who raised him. A one hour visitation will be held on Saturday from 1:00-2:00 at Christ Lutheran Church, 1302 E. Washington Street, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 pm. Burial will be in Fort Sill National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
