Obituary

David G. Speed, 85, of 3538 Hunters Woods Blvd., New Castle, passed away the morning of May 5, 2010 at his residence.Born June 19, 1924 in New Castle, he was the son of James N. and Hannah Jones Speed. He married Barbara J. Wilson Speed on July 23, 1947. She survives in New Castle.He was a graduate of New Castle High School in 1942 and was employed as a supervisor of systems operations with Penn Power for thirty nine years.Mr. Speed served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant during WWII from 1943 to 1945.He was a member of Lodge of the Craft/Westminster 433, New Castle Consistory, Legion of Honor, Syria Shrine, Lawrence Caravan #15. He also served on the the Rainbow Board and the Butler County Amateur Radio Association and was Board Emeritus of Chautauqua Association of Disciples of Christ.He was a member of First Christian Church where he served as an elder for many years.In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, David L. Speed of Carlsbad, NM and Robert W. Speed of Cranberry Township, PA; and four grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert J. Speed.Visitation will be held Friday, May 7, 2010, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 8, 2010, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle.A funeral service will be on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Ty Sabella, The Rev. Doug Shoaff and The Rev. Gary Crowe will officiate. Full military rites will be given by the New Castle Area Honor Guard.Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 23 W. Washington Street, New Castle, PA 16101.
