Donald E. Fortney, 86, of Edinburg, passed away the morning of November 7, 2019 at UPMC Jameson Hospital. Born October 30, 1933 in New Castle, he was the son of John R. and Nell (Bowles) Fortney. He was preceded in death on January 30, 2011 by his wife of 47 years, Joycelyn (Toy) Fortney, whom he married August 10, 1963. Donald attended New Castle High School and then went on to serve his country in the US Army from 1956-1958 in the 108th Infantry, serving in Bremerhaven and Heidelberg, Germany. Prior to his employment at the Lawrence County Courthouse where he was a maintenance worker for 22 years, he worked as a bricklayer for 35 years at Shenango China. A member of Edinburg Methodist Church, Mr. Fortney enjoyed camping and the outdoors, and especially loved time spent with his family. He is survived by three daughters, Arlene Niglio (Peter) of Edinburg, Lori Grim (Mariusz) of Lordstown, Ohio and Karen Kuchma (Andy) of Pulaski; two sons, John H. Fortney (Stacey) of Edinburg and Donald E. Fortney (Marcy) of Mahoningtown; a son-in-law, John Grim of Edinburg; 16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 11, from 5:00-8:00 and Tuesday, November 12, from 11:00-12:00 at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 12:00 at the funeral home with the Rev. Josh Watts of City Church of New Castle officiating. Military rites will be performed by the New Castle Area Honor Guard. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery in New Middletown, Ohio. Online condolences may be offered at www.cunninghamfh.com
