Donald Smith, Jr. of New Castle, PA, passed away on September 12, 2020, after a brief final illness. His wife of sixty-six years, Nancy Hughes Smith, predeceased him nine months earlier, and Don missed her every day. While Don loved his earthly family, he was ready to meet his Lord and Savior. The family extends their heartfelt love and gratitude to all those who cared for Don and Nancy in the year prior to his passing. Don is predeceased by his parents Donald and Ruth Mailler Smith of Hempstead, New York, and his sister, Doris Smith Cleland of Rangeley, Maine. He is survived by three children, D. Bruce Smith (Cheryl) of Berkeley Heights, N.J.; Deborah S. Beichner (Gary) of New Castle; and Barbara S. Picard (Fred) of Richmond, VA; his eight grandchildren: Elizabeth Belle (Steven); Barbara Anne Lewis (Matthew); Morgan Smith; Haley Smith; Erick Picard; Ian Picard (Michelle); Colin Picard; Meghann Picard; and four great-grandchildren: Landon Lewis; Calleigh Lewis; Camille Belle; and Liam Belle. Don was born in Hempstead, NY on March 22, 1930. He received his BA from Colgate University and entered graduate school at Hofstra University to obtain his MBA. His graduate work was interrupted when the Army drafted him during the Korean conflict. He served as a corporal in the 28th General Hospital in La Rochelle, France. By God's grace, however, Army regulations permitted Nancy, his wife of seven months, to join him there. Don credited his years in the service with providing him a focus which he lacked before he was drafted. He learned upon being discharged that their family of two would become a family of three, and two more children followed shortly after their first. Don began with Bell of Pennsylvania in 1955 and held various positions with the company in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh before moving to New Castle in 1961. The last 18 months of his career were spent with AT&T Information Systems before he retired after 30 years. Don and Nancy agreed that they wanted to raise their family in New Castle, and Don asked that he not be considered for positions requiring transfers. He went on to serve as the New Castle District Manager until December 1983 and during this time that decision served him well. Not only was he active in the community but more importantly to him and to his family, he was home for dinner at night, and was able to participate in his children's sports and school activities. Don was active in the Rotary Club; he was a Sunday School teacher and a Trustee at Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church; he served from 1969 – 1979 on the Neshannock Township School Board during which time he was instrumental in successfully negotiating the 1978 labor contract dispute; he served as the Treasurer of the School Board; he served a term as President of the United Way and a term as Campaign Chairman of the United Way. Don loved playing golf and spending time on the golf course. After his death, his children found a journal he kept detailing every round of golf played with his regular foursome, truly exhibiting a love of the game. He finally achieved his elusive hole-in-one on June 24, 1995 on the 13th hole of the New Castle Country Club. There will be no calling hours. The family is gathering privately on May 22, 2021 at Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church to celebrate his legacy and his life. The family suggests memorial gifts to Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church, 220 E.
