Obituary

Dorothy F. (Flaugher) Kennedy, of New Castle, was born on May 13, 1923, and passed away on September 12, 2024, at the age of 101 years and four months. She was blessed with a long life and saw her children to the fifth generation.

Dorothy was born at home to the late Riley C. and Zetta Porter Flaugher. During her lifetime, she was active in her community and belonged to the Rotary Ann's and served as president of the Walmo Garden Club. She was an active member of First Alliance Church where she served as the superintendent of the Cradle Roll, secretary for the Alliance Women Fellowship, served a term as secretary of the board and as a Sunday school teacher. Dorothy was musically talented and often sang in church and played the piano and organ.

Dorothy was a gifted seamstress and made clothes not only for herself, but her daughters and granddaughters, including several wedding dresses. She took a woodworking class and made pieces of furniture for each of her daughters. For many years, she worked as the manager of Weingartner Florist located in the Towne Mall.

Dorothy is survived by her three daughters, Naomi (William) Barker of New Castle; Jeanne Ann Hunt of New Castle, and Amy (Brian) Hillstrom of West Chicago, IL. Dorothy is fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Debbie (Biagio) Coiro, William (Risa) Barker II, Pamela (Doug Wilson) Hunt Capaldi, Jeffrey Hunt, Emily Hillstrom, Anne (Andrew) Lindquist, and Matthew (fiancée Erica Forker) Hillstrom; great-grandchildren, Biagio (Macy) Coiro, Michael (Tara Macri) Coiro, Quinn Barker, Mae, Joel, and Charlie Capaldi, and Lawson and Emma Lindquist; a great-great grandson, Axell Coiro and a great- great granddaughter to be born next month; one sister, Florence Ayers of Cranberry Township; a brother Joseph W. Flaugher of New Jersey; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Miles W. Kennedy, in 1996; her brothers, Ralph R. Flaugher, James H. Flaugher, and Charles Flaugher; sisters Alma Cioffi, Thelma DeCaprio, and Virginia Thompson; and her son-in-law, Charles L. Hunt, with whom she spoke with every day until his passing.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 19, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home, 2429 Wilmington Road and on Friday, September 20, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at First Alliance Church, 111 Mission Meade Drive with a funeral service immediately following at 11:00 a.m.

Her daughters would like to thank the staff of the Haven Convalescent Home for their tender care of their mother during her last days.

While we will miss our mother, we know she is present with her Savior and Lord.
