Obituary

Dorothy I. Spiker, 95, formerly of North Point Drive, passed away the afternoon of December 27, 2013 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born October 2, 1918 in New Castle, she was a daughter of Hatten LeRoy and Essie Fredrick Shaffer. She was preceded in death on October 3, 1997 by her husband of 60 years, Dale D. Spiker, whom she married September 16, 1937. Dorothy was a graduate of Union High School in 1936 when she was a member of the Union High School Girl's Basketball Championship team that same year. Dorothy was both a devoted wife and a loving mother. Among her many interests were gardening and crossword puzzles. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church. Survivors include three sons and their wives, Dyrke L. and Arlene Spiker of Rincon, GA, Darrell D. and Cynthia Spiker and Douglas L. and Susan Spiker all of New Castle; one sister, Eleanor Bigham of Clinton, Ohio; 6 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, John Shaffer; and two sisters, Mary Johnson and Ruth Saunders. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 31, 2013, from 12:00-3:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home and will be officiated by Pastor Anthony Kladitis. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Northminster Presbyterian Church, 2434 Wilmington Road, New Castle, PA 16105.
