Earl R. Covert, 93, of Jameson Place., passed away the evening of November 23, 2014 at Jameson Hospital. Born February 10, 1921 in New Castle, he was a son of Thomas L. and Bertha Anderson Covert. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Marian "Jean" Stevenson Covert, whom he married September 7, 1943. Earl served in the Navy during WWII as a Sonar Man Third Class, until his honorable discharge on October 16, 1945. He was employed with Penn Power Company for 36 years as a boiler operator until retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Masonic Mahoning New Castle Lodge, No. 243, the New Castle Consistory, Syria Shrine, Perry Gaston Post No. 343, and Legion of Honor. A member of New Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church, he attended the Covenant Searchers Class. In addition to his wife Jean, he is survived by two daughters, Marlene and Denny Masser of Spring, TX and Sandra & Craig Holmgren of Marine on St. Croix, MINN; two sons, Thomas A. and Janet Covert of New Castle, and William E and Brenda Covert of Cary, NC; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sharren King-Ofslager; one brother, Thomas E. Covert; one sister, Mary Phillips; and a grandson Anders Holmgren. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 30, from 2:00-4:30 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation at 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Phillip Covert, Earl's grandson, and Rev. John Yergan will be officiating. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military rites at 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fair Oaks Cemetery.
