Edith Waldman passed away on May 23, 2012 at her home at the age of 96.She was born on November 18, 1915 in Youngstown, Ohio to Lewis and Golda Rasha Mirkin who predeceased her.She married Martin Waldman on June 24, 1937 in Olean, New York. He predeceased her in 1983.She graduated from Rayen High School in Youngstown at the age of 15 and worked as a bookkeeper for several firms. She helped her husband found Waldman's Meats in New Castle in 1947 working as a clerk, bookkeeper and advisor.She had two sons, Bruce Waldman (Elisabeth) of New Castle and Dr. David Waldman (Judy) of Youngstown, Ohio; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Todd) Kay, Matthew Waldman, Todd (Rachel) Waldman and Andrew Waldman; two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Evan Kay; a step-granddaughter, Tiffany Brown; and three step-great-grandchildren, Bobby, Alec and Arianna Brown.She was preceded in death by her brothers Samuel and Allan Mirkin and sisters Ann Cohen, Rose Roseman, and Yetta Shuman.Her love of life was giving financially and emotionally to others. She traveled the globe with her husband and she volunteered for several months to help settlers in Israel from foreign lands. She was a lifelong member of Tifereth Israel Synagogue, now Temple Hadar Israel. She was President of and lifelolng member of the Temple Sisterhood, a life member of Hadassah, and the Women's Club.She was a self-described news junkie and read voraciously. She wrote cards and letters to family and friends on a daily basis to remember them on any occasion.Visitation will be held at R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc, 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, on Friday, May 25, 2012 from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.A funeral service will be held immediately following the visitation at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Rabbi Martin Shorr will officiate.Burial will be in Tifereth Israel Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sophia Waldman Floral Fund, Temple Hadar Israel, 403 E. Moody Ave., PO Box 1432, New Castle, PA 16103 or a hospice or a charity of donor's choice.
