Obituary

Edna Fox Johnson was born May 10, 1921, in Sarver, PA, the third of nine children born to William E. and Margaret Louise Pittman Fox. She departed this life on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at Hospice House on Sharrott Road, Poland, Ohio, having outlived her parents and all of her eight siblings: sisters Grace Fennell, Rose Hilliard Dawson, and Betty Crawfordand brothers Claire, Clarence, William Elmer, ernest, and Harold Fox. She spent her youth living in Sarver, PA, until her marriage to Earl Perry Johnson on August 29, 1939, and moved as a new bride to the then booming town of New Castle, PA. Following Earl's death on May 30, 1972, Edna remained a resident of New Castle the rest of her life.Edna took great pride in taking care of her family and teaching them her life's values. Her first born, Gerald Wayne Johnson was born on August 10, 1941, and died unexpectedly at 19 months of age of pneumonia. She never forgot him and honored his birthday every August. Edna gave birth to two additional children, a daughter Janice Louise Johnson (Atty. Paul R. Harper) and a second daugthter, Marian Elaine Johnson (David Lee Kennedy) both of whom survive her. Being a kind and caring person, Edna took a cute, little 4-year-old neighbor girl named Eleanor Martin (Michael Boswak) into her heart and always loved her and called her "daughter". Edna taught her three daughters by example to be hard-working, compassionate, loyal, trustworthy, and most of all, how to be a lady. Her gentle, kind spirit never allowed her to turn her back on anyone in need. She always responded with caring, usually accompanied by baked cookies, soup, or something hot from her kitchen, particularly at Neshannock Woods where she resided for over 26 years.Edna liked to travel, play bingo, make crafts, and was particularly proud of meeting Presidnet John F. Kennedy and helping with his election campaign. A life-long Presbyterian, she enjoyed reading her Bible daily. In addition to her daughters, she is survived by six grandchildren; Shannon (Kara) Birt of Geneva, OH., William L. Birt, Jr. of Slippery Rock, PA, Donald (Laura) Kennedy of Edinburg, PA, Dean Allen (Dana) Kennedy, David Wayne (Michelle) Kennedy and Deanna (Orville) Ridenbaugh all of New Castle, PA; ten great-grandchildren; David L. Kennedy, II, Tara M. Price, Cross J. Kennedy, Benjamin P. and Russell S. Ridenbaugh, Jenna and Cody Fisher, Jenna and Jackson Birt, and Russell J. Kennedy; and three great great grandchildren; Jozlyn and Erica Price and Brooklyn Kennedy. The family especially wishes to thank the staff and personnel of the Vintage House Personal Care home and those of Hospice House for her excellent care.Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 9, 2010, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the R.
