Edward Porada, 96, passed away on October 9th at his home in New Castle, PA surrounded by his family. Ed was born May 25, 1919 to Frank and Mary (Gargasz) Porada in Volant, PA. He graduated from New Castle High School in 1938. He married his beautiful wife, Betty Jane (Wilcox) Porada, in 1943.
Edward served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army/Air Force during World War II where he piloted B29 airplanes. He was stationed on the island of Saipan. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Purple Heart, and The Air Medal.
Edward was a life long member of the former First Christian Church of New Castle where he was an elder, deacon, and he sang bass in the choir. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason.
After a long career as a manager with Sherwin Williams Paints, he retired in 1982. Until recently, Ed loved to bowl and golfed in several senior leagues. He also loved to hunt, fish, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Edward is survived by his sons, James (Sandy) Porada, David Porada, and Frank (Sally) Porada; daughters, Sue Ellen (Edward) Lewis and Elizabeth Porada with whom he made his home. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren; Deanne Petrangeli, Mark (Angela) Porada, Michelle (Mike) Altenhof, Stephen (Yi Hong Sim) Lewis, James Lewis, and Elizabeth Lewis. He is also survived by his 10 great-grandchildren.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 42 years, Betty Jane, and his beloved grandson Michael James Porada. Also preceding Edward in death were his companion of nearly 20 years, Harriett Rice, and his 4 brothers; John Porada, William Porada, Joseph Porada, and Carl Porada and his 3 sisters; Veronica Lewis, Annette Danker, and Helen Letera.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home on Wilmington Road from 4p.m. to 7 p.m. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday.
