Eleanor "Nellie" Falba passed away peacefully at her home on May 28, 2013 with her daughter by her side following a courageous nine month battle with small cell lung cancer. Nellie was born in New Castle, PA on January 7, 1930, the oldest daughter of the late Herman M. and Clara Mann Lutton and was one of seven children. Nellie's education was in the New Castle school system, she was always so proud of having skipped the fourth grade to go to fifth grade ahead of her classmates. She loved to play marbles as a youth and tells stories of how much candy you could get for a penny. Nellie marries her beloved Joe on November 26, 1949 and together they enjoyed roller skating, baseball games and bowling. Joe built their home in the South New Castle Borough where they raised four children, Joseph G. (Barbara), James D. (Rae Lynn), John M., and Melissa A. (Todd) Davis. They led a busy, but fun filled life with the four kids. Nellie lost her husband in the year of 1975. Although she grieved his loss, Nellie, being the strong independent person that she was, stayed in their home and continued bowling with her lady friends, climbing to one of the top ten bowlers in the area. She loved playing billiards and was very competitive in all types of games. She was always up on current events, read the paper daily and worked the crossword. She was an avid reader of murder mysteries and some of her favorite TV shows included the original Hawaii 5-0, Murder She Wrote, Jeopardy and the Golden Girls which always cracked her up. She enjoyed all of the Pittsburgh sports teams and Penn State Football. She was a volunteer and member of the Challenges Senior Center where she power walked, played bingo, cards and had many friends. She loved trying her luck at the local casinos and went on numerous trips with her daughter to include: Edisto Island, Washington DC, Disney, New York City, a Caribbean cruise, Las Vegas, Fallingwater, Hoover Dam, Niagara Falls, Nashville and Graceland. She was always amazed at all the wonderful things she got to do and see on their trips. Nellie was always on the move and led a full and enjoyable life until her recent health issues. Nellie will be deeply and forever missed by her two sons and daughter, sisters, Eileen Slagle and her husband Butch; and Marie Brandenberg; her dear helpful grandson Joey and her bingo buddy Linda. She also leaves many other grandchildren and one great granddaughter.Besides Nellie's parents and her beloved husband, she was preceded in death by her cherished son, John, her sisters, Mary Libengood and Josey Mowat; brothers, Tom Lutton and Herman (Butch) Lutton, Jr. The family invites you to share memories of Nellie's life by joining them for visitation on Friday, May 31, from 5:00-8:00 and Saturday, June 1, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home and will be officiated by hospice chaplain, Patricia Sawaya. Nellie will be laid to rest next to her husband and among her son's ashes at St. Joseph's Cemetery. A special thank you goes to Dr. Ned Underwood and Dr. Nicholas Prioa of St. Elizabeth's hospital who discovered the cancer in its early stages. This led us to the phenomenal Dr. Sheryl Simon and Dr. Steve Wilson and their compassionate staff that gave my mom incredible care and kindness during her treatment. "Fear says we can't. Faith says we can." Her remission status was a good 4 months but on May 6 the metastasis went to her liver. She never cried a tear. Much gratitude to Jameson Hospice for providing Nellie excellent health care during her final weeks. Her family is most appreciative for their loving support.
