Obituary

Eleanor R. Walker, 93, of Shenango Township, passed away the morning of April 1, 2018 at UPMC Jameson Hospital. Born December 30, 1924 in Winchester, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of John A. and Loretta D. Ryan Doherty Jones and step-daughter of Thomas Jones. She was preceded in death on January 29, 1972 by her husband, Howard E. Walker, Jr. whom she married in 1947. She was a 1942 graduate of Medford High School in Massachusetts. Eleanor was employed as a supervisor with Liberty Mutual Insurance in the Business Policy Production/Auditing Department for 31 years, until her retirement in 1992. She was member of the American Business Womens Association and the YMCA for many years. Among her many interests, Eleanor enjoyed reading, playing cards, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and travel. She liked planting flowers and taking care of her home, but especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. An active member of Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church of Ellwood City, she served as a past elder and was a member of Presbyterian Womens Ruth Circle and Naomi Circle. She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Gayle A. and David Schmidt of Chicago, ILL and one son and wife, John D. and Cheryl Walker of Wampum, PA; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Doherty of Massachusetts and Harriett Beatty of New Castle; and 5 grandchildren, Kerri Schmidt, Brian (Jody) Schmidt, Ryan Walker, Kristen Walker and Lindsey Walker. In addition to her parents, step-father and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John Doherty and Marine Cpl. Charles Doherty. Visitation will be held on Friday from 11:00-1:00 at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Carolyn Moss officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
