Elizabeth Joan Stewart, 89, of New Castle, passed away the morning of October 15, 2018 at Rhodes Estates. Born September 4, 1929 in New Castle, she was the daughter of Julian and Elizabeth (Chambers) Miller. Joan was married to Eugene R. Stewart, who preceded her in death on July 1, 1970. A graduate of Union High School, she was employed as a clerk for 30 years with Joann Fabrics until her retirement. Joan was an accomplished seamstress and an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. In earlier years she enjoyed bowling. She is survived by two daughters, Lauren (Joseph) Seminara of Edinburg and Jodene (Dan) Rossi of New Castle; two sons, Scott (Margret) Stewart of Orlando, Florida and Robert (Suzanne) Stewart of Douglasville, GA; a sister-in-law, Jane (Gayle) Kerr of Honeybrook, PA; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and her long-time companion, Frank Burkes. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Julian Bud Miller and a sister-in-law, Joanne Miller. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 17, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., immediately followed by a funeral service at 11:30 at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. Rev. Matthew Bupp will officiate. Burial will be in Castle View Cemetery.
