Elma Karki Lepisto, age 97, passed away the afternoon of March 24, 2013 at the Haven Convalescent Home. Born April 6, 1915, in New Castle, she was a daughter of Ida Haltunen Karki and Henry Karki, Sr. She graduated from New Castle High School in 1933, and in 1936 she married Carl Adam Lepisto, also from New Castle. They were both life-long members of Trinity Lutheran Church of the Suomi Synod on Ray Street and after the merger, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. They loved to travel together, and they took many trips around the United States, starting with a cross-country camping trip to New Mexico and Arizona with their children in 1953. He preceded her in death in 1973. She was an avid and gifted quilter, loved caring for her home and garden, and took great pleasure in travel, even in later life, traveling to Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, and to Finland three times to visit cousins, even at age 88. She is survived by two sisters, Miriam Karki Lepisto of New Castle, and Norma Karki Welker and husband James of New Wilmington. She is also survived by her children, David Lepisto and wife Susan of Gilbertsville, Kentucky; daughter Karen Love of Charlottesville, Virginia; and son Jonathan Lepisto of New Castle, Colorado; as well as grandchildren, Aimee Lepisto, Andrew Lepisto and wife Jenifer of Kentucky, Jordan Love and husband Matthew Loftus, of Virginia, Raleigh Love of Buffalo, New York, Carly Quinlan and husband Billy of Vancouver, BC, Lauren Weiss and husband Travis of Winter Springs, Florida, and Karsten Koch and wife Maiko of Japan. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Olivia and Owen Lepisto, Roisin Quinlan, John Loftus, and Aila Koch, as well as many nieces and nephews, and also several cousins in Finland. Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers William, Henry, Andrew, and Paul, and sisters Viola and Laina. There will be a brief visitation on Thursday, March 28, 2013, from 10:30 - 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with a funeral service immediately following at 11:00. Rev. Erin Boyer will officiate. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2323 Old Butler Road, New Castle, PA 16101. Arrangements are being handled by the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.
