Elwina (Sprink) Messner Benedict, 97, formerly of Honeybee Lane, passed away the afternoon of Nov. 2, 2012 at Haven Convalescent Home. Born Nov. 27, 1914 in New Castle, she was the daughter of Clarence J. and Tina Hoyland Dodds. Elwina married Leroy E. Messner in 1934. He passed away in 1960. Years later, she married George Benedict, whom also preceded her in passing in 1976. A graduate of Union High School, she was a member of New Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church. She previously was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon.Elwina was a beautician and was also employed as a receptionist for Dr. Cunningham. She was a member of several bridge clubs, and was a volunteer for the Red Cross at Jameson Hospital. Survivors include two sons, Wayne L. Messner of New Wilmington, and David C. Messner of New Castle; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Dodds; and her sister, Mildred Ramsey. A private family service was conducted Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Rd. Pastor Chris Curtis officiated. Burial was in Castle View Gardens.
