Erma J. Shindledecker, 96, formerly of New Castle, passed away December 27, 2014 at Golden Living Nursing Home in Camp Hill, PA.
Born July 5, 1918 in New Castle, she was a daughter of H. Clair and Ella May McConnell Matthews.
Erma was a 1937 graduate of New Castle High School.
She was preceded in death on February 11, 1992 by her husband of 51 years, Rev. Ormel G. Shindledecker, whom she married April 4, 1940. Together, they served many Methodist churches in Western PA and New York.
Erma was a member of First United Methodist Church of New Castle.
She enjoyed being a homemaker and spent her leisure time sewing, quilting and doing needlework.
She is survived by a son, James D. (Cary) Shindledecker of Corry, PA; two daughters, Nancy Nuhfer of Venus, PA, and Shirley (Joseph) Hall of York Haven, PA; grandchildren, Mark Nuhfer of Eatonton,, GA, David (Marina) Shindledecker of Erie, PA, Todd Nuhfer, Matthew Jennings of Lawrenceville, GA, Craig (Amanda) Shindledecker of Lakewood, CO, Kevin (Mandy) Nuhfer of Milledgeville, GA; Kiely (Brett) Hall LaValley of Conshohocken, PA, and Emily (Nate) Ruble of Claymont, Del; and seven great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Alex, John, and Anna Shindledecker, Summer and Hope Nuhfer, and Mason Nuhfer.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris Jean Shindledecker; a son-in-law, Michael Nuhfer; and three sisters, Hazel Holsapfel, Pearl Bodendorfer, and Ida Grace Matthews; and a brother, Finley Matthews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 11:00-12:00 at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.
A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation at 12:00 at the funeral home with Rev. Thomas Scott officiating.
Burial will be in King's Chapel Cemetery.
