Eugene E. Atwell, 76, of New Castle, passed away the evening of March 26, 2018 at Clen-Moore Place.
Born July 21, 1941 in Port Arthur, TX, he was the son of the late William K. and Donna Eugenia Bell Atwell.
When Eugene was only 15 years old, he met his beloved wife, Charlean E. Whann Atwell, who was also only 15 at the time. He saw her from afar, picking strawberries in the strawberry patch. On March 16, 1963 he married Charlean. They just celebrated 55 wonderful years of marriage together. She survives at home.
Mr. Atwell was a graduate of Franklin High School. He went onto work at Nickles Bakery where he sold bread for 33 years, eventually retiring in 1998. Over the years, Eugene and his wife, Charlean, helped raise over 19 foster children. Eugene enjoyed hunting, bus trips, high school football. He was a member of New Life Baptist Church. What gave Eugene the greatest joy in life was spending time with his beloved family and grandchildren.
Eugene is survived by one daughter; Susan (Steve) Texter of Jamestown, Pa., one son; Daniel (Kathy) Atwell of New Castle, Pa., four sisters; Florence Barker of Titusville, Pa., Areta Mong of Franklin Pa., Metta Banyas and Twila Keene, both of Cleveland Oh., and four grandchildren; Emilee, Adam and Brady Atwell and Steven (Pete)Texter.
Along with his parents, Eugene is preceded in death by one son; Steven E. Atwell, two sisters; Jesse Timmis and Turzah Gardner, and three brothers; Arthur, Fleming, and Terrell Atwell.
Visitation will be on Friday March 30, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A Funeral service will be immediately following at noon, with the Rev. Ron Nagel officiating.
Burial will be a Graceland Cemetery.
