Eugene A. Gurgiolo, 84, of New Castle entered into eternal rest on January 16, 2016 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital, peacefully and surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Charles and Romilda (Cosentino) Gurgiolo. Gene was born in Pittsburgh on June 7, 1931 and grew up in New Castle, where he was a star pitcher for the local American Legion team and other area baseball clubs. Following his graduation from New Castle High School in 1949, he served in the US Navy during the Korean War, then was employed as a letter carrier with the US Postal Service, retiring in 1992. Gene was intensely proud of and devoted to his family. He will be dearly missed by them, and fondly remembered as a steadfast friend with a wonderful sense of humor by all who knew him. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 55 years, the former Marmee Houk, as well as 3 sons and daughters-in-law: Dan and Jodi of Edinburg, Mike and Melanie of Camp Hill, and Tom and Nancy of Westerville, OH; and 7 grandchildren: Marcus, Abby, Rachel, Matt, Sammy, Addie, and Ben. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Armand and Don. Gene was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he had served as a vestryman. He was also a Little League baseball coach and an avid bowler, as well as a longtime Red Hurricane basketball season ticket holder. He supported all of the Pittsburgh sports teams, and enjoyed family vacations on Hilton Head Island, gardening, and playing cards and board games with family and friends. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home, 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, 212 N.
