Frances "Nellie" Butts, 97, of Jameson Care Center, passed the morning of September 14, 2010 at her residence.Born February 22, 1913 in New Castle, she was a daughter of Alfred C. and Nellie Murphy Hyde. Her father established Hyde Drug Store in New Castle.She married Milton Lee Butts on August 3, 1940. He preceded her in death on October 29, 1989.Nellie was a graduate of New Castle High School and went on to Allegheny College where she graduated in 1935.She was the first female teacher in the Mahoningtown School District and also taught at Union High School.Nellie was a member of Wimodausis, PSERS for retired teachers, the Evening Women's Club, and XYZ. Among her many interests were crossword puzzles, swimming, golf, reading, knitting and traveling.She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church where she was active with the LAFF (Life After Fifty Five) group.She is survived by three daughters, Susan G. Swab of Warren, PA, Carolee A. and George Wharry and Deborah K. and Philip Lasky of New Castle; one son, David L. and Kathleen Butts of Industry, PA; nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by one brother, Alfred Kyle.A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church.
