Obituary

Franklin J. Sherman, 100 years old, of Poland, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at Shepherd of the Valley Assisted Living Home. He was born on November 26, 1915 in Mt. Zion, Pennsylvania to Andrew and Eva (Darkes) Sherman. He graduated from Fredericksburg High School and later served in the US Army. His career included sales and management in the new field of cut up poultry, and later he became the owner of a small cleaning and dust control company. Franklin was predeceased by his first wife, Madelyn; second wife, Frieda; brothers Lloyd and Andrew; sisters Beatrice Sando, Anna Sherman and JoAnn Feaser; and sons-in-law Donald Aiken and Wayne Cornelius. Surviving are his daughters, Jane Cornelius and Doris Aiken (Roger) Cousineau; grandsons Donn (Holly) Aiken, Wayne Jr. (Erika) Cornelius, and David (Dana) Cornelius; and granddaughter Allison (Eric) Waldschmidt. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren, Ian, Ryan, Evan, and Christian Waldschmidt, Ashley and Nathan Cornelius, Heather and Haley Aiken, and Drew Cornelius. He is also survived by his sisters Dorothy (Ronald) Ross, Bertha Deck, and many nieces and nephews. Franklin had been an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in New Castle, Pennsylvania and enjoyed his association with the Masonic Lodge, Elks, and American Legion in New Castle. Golf was his sport of choice, and though his baseball playing days were over, he loved to cheer on the Pittsburgh Pirates. He found great pleasure using the word processor on his computer to compose poems about family, friends and faith. Collections of these poems were self-published. Special recognition must be made for the loving support of the staff of Shepherd of the Valley and Senior Advantage Hospice. When asked how he lived so vibrantly to 100, he credited his wonderful doctors, especially Dr. Albani and his staff. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 25 at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, PA. from 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow immediately at noon with the Rev. Dr. Levi J. Ziegler, first cousin of Frankin, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Online condolences may be offered at www.cunninghamfh.com
