Frederick Bruce Smith, age 72 of New Castle, passed away on August 2, 2019, in Pittsburgh, PA, following a short illness.
Born September 3, 1946, in Ellwood City, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph P. and Rhoda Jean (McClelland) Smith. He is survived by his wife Judith K. (Bogle) Smith of New Castle and his son, Patrick W. Smith of Pittsburgh.
Bruce was a graduate of Ellwood City High School, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Westminster College. He was employed by Shenango High School as an educator, baseball, and football coach.
He was an active participant with the Lawrence County Historical Society, including the committee for the Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame. After his retirement, he remained active with the Shenango School District, participating in the committee for their Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. Bruce also remained dedicated to his college fraternity, Theta Chi. He was an avid reader who loved dogs, golfing, playing cards, discussing politics, classic movies, sports, and researching his family's history. Bruce attended First Alliance Church.
In addition to his parents, preceding him in death are two sisters, Vera Jean Wilson and Judith Miller, and one brother, Joseph P. Smith, Jr.
Visitation will be held at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, PA 16105, on Saturday, August 10 from 3:00-6:00PM with a service immediately following on Saturday at 6:00PM with Rev. Philip Harrison officiating.
