George P. Hanna, 90, of Rhodes Estates, New Castle, passed away April 1, 2014 at Jameson Hospital.Born March 19, 1924 in Masontown, PA, he was a son of Slamon and Zahwee Hanna.George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rose Abraham Hanna whom he married on November 1, 1953.He served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Technician Fourth Grade before entering college at Slippery Rock College, followed by Penn State University and West Virginia University, where he obtaining his Master's Degree.Most of his lifetime, George was a high school principal, serving at Pleasant View High School and several others, until employment at Ohio State University. He later worked for Michael D. Hanna and Associates.A fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, he enjoyed attending and tailgating many college games.Among his other interests were golfing, crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader.Prior to his membership at St. Elias Orthodox Church, he was a member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral in Pittsburgh.In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Laurice Dailey and Nancy Long, both of Pittsburgh; two sons, Sam Hanna of Columbus, OH, and George Hanna of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, and 5 brothers.Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 6, 2014, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and Monday, April 7, 2014, from 11:00-1:00 at St. Elias Orthodox Church, 915 Lynn Street, New Castle. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation Monday, April 7, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at the church and will be officiated by the Very Rev. Kevin Gregory Long.Burial will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.Memorial contributions may be made to St. Elias Orthodox Church.Arrangements are entrusted to the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.
