George R. Koivula, 86, of Union Township, passed away the afternoon of March 9, 2013 at the Haven Convalescent Home. Born July 6, 1926, in New Castle, he was a son of Victor R. and Katie Hyytia Koivula. He was a 1934 graduate of New Castle High School. George served in the U.S. Army with the military police during WWII. He was employed with the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier. George was an avid animal lover, enjoyed line dancing, and was a member of the Eagles Club.He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he sang in the church choir. Survivors include three daughters, Karen Black, Debra Koivula, and Audreen Stiteler and her husband Terry, all of New Castle; a sister, Mildred Grimm of Piedmont, OH; six grandchildren, Amber (Jeremy) Weir, Brianne LaScola, Thomas Stiteler, Tiffany (Dominick) Grant, Katie (Chezy) Russo and Jolene Stiteler; five great-grandchildren; his companion, Eileen Harding; and his extended family at the Haven. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Walter Koivula and one sister, Elma Whitmire. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 11, 2013, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, March 12, 2013, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation at 11:00 a.m. Tuesdaym March 12, 2013, at the funeral home and will be officiated by Rev. Dennis Blauser.
