George Phillip Miles, of New Castle, Pennsylvania, passed away on October 24, 2026.
Born September 7, 1947, in Ellwood City, he was the son of Bert and Lorene (McCann) Miles who preceded him in death.
George was a 1965 graduate of Laurel High School and then Slippery Rock College. He went on to teach at Laurel High School and dedicated nearly 50 years to Spartan football. He spent 31 years as head coach, leading the Spartans to a WPIAL Championship in 1980. Even after his years as head coach, George continued coaching by joining Brian Cooper’s staff and the “Old Man” regularly showed up to practices and offered help. Laurel football was a big part of his life, and he enjoyed being around the players and the program. In addition to his football coaching career, he was the head track coach for 47 years. During his tenure he coached his sons, grandsons, and several nephews. His sons Ryan and Casey continue his Spartan coaching tradition.
When he wasn't teaching or coaching, George enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. He also enjoyed testing his luck at the casino. The trips to his hunting camp, West Virginia and Canada were cherished times and brought many special memories with family and friends. He was known for his great sense of humor and love of telling jokes, always keeping those around him laughing.
He is survived by his wife, Patty (Urey) Miles; his sons, Ryan (Jennifer) Miles, Casey (Jessica) Miles, and Bert (Erin) Miles; and their mother Marta (Wilson) Miles; his grandchildren, Lauren Miles, Alexandra (Domenic) Morell, Mitch Miles, Abbie Miles, Jack Miles; and his great-grandchild, Ozzy Flowers.
He is also survived by his siblings, Joseph (Kathy) Miles, Betty Bodziach, Jean (Denny) Dean, Robert (Cindy) Miles, and Judy (Sam) Haggerty, along with many nieces and nephews.
George spent much of his life teaching, coaching, and working with young people in the Laurel community. Over five decades, he became a familiar face to generations of players, students, and their families. His dedication to Laurel Spartan athletics was an important part of his life, and he will be remembered by the many people who knew him through the program and in the community. His influence on the many young people he coached will make a lasting impact.
