George W. Schmidt, Jr. 91, passed away Sunday night, February 25 at UPMC Jameson. Born in New Castle on February 26, 1926 the eldest of three sons of the late George W. Schmidt, Sr. and Florence Ewalt Schmidt. A graduate of Sharpsville High School, he then served our country in World War II in the Army Air Force. After being honorably discharged in 1946, George went to work for Bell Telephone Company in Sharon-Sharpsville and was transferred to New Castle in 1951 before retiring 36 years later. George was a member of F & AM #433, New Castle Consistory, Telephone Pioneers of America (FTWP) and Eagles #455. He has spent time enjoying hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling and CB clubs. George married Oneida Rhew Schmidt in 1947 and Carolyn Connerly Schmidt in 1968 who remained his beloved wife until her passing in 2006. Preceding him in death are his two brothers, Robert Schmidt of St. Clairsville, OH and John Schmidt of Sharpsville, PA. George treasured his times with his family. He is survived by three daughters: Victoria Walters of Alabama; Gail Schmidt Tyrrell of Raleigh, NC and Colleen McKim Rosenholm of New Castle along with five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 1 from 5:00-8:00pm and Services at 1:00 pm Friday March 2, both will take place at Cunningham Funeral Home, 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. He will be laid to rest at Oak Park Cemetery.
