Obituary

Harold O. "Hud" Wetzel, 90, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of June 3, 2014 at Jameson Hospital.Born January 21, 1924 in Rossiter, PA, he was a son of Ray and Mildred Cessna Wetzel.Surviving at home is his wife of 30 years, Helen Waite Wetzel, whom he married January 5, 1984.Hud served his country in the Army as a sergeant with the 702nd Tank Destroyer Battalion, receiving the Purple Heart.He was employed as a heavy equipment operator with Medure's Sand Company.Hud was active in several organizations including the American Legion in Glen Campbell, PA, the VFW in Indiana, PA, and the Eagles Club of New Castle. He was an avid bowler and was of Methodist faith.In addition to his wife Helen, he is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Sue and Wayne Glenn of Charlotte, NC, Debra and Richard Dale of Punxsutawney, PA, and Denise and Donald Johnson of Indiana, PA; one son, Harold Wetzel of Indiana, PA; his former wife, Grace Brickel Wetzel of Punxsutawney; one sister, Freida Farmery of St. Mary's, PA; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, and 6 sisters.The family will not be having calling hours.A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at Burnside Cemetery in Burnside, PA. Rev. John Buchmann of Punxsutawney Alliance Church will officiate.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.Arrangements are by the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle.
