Harry Floyd Whitman, 93, of 2206 Audley Avenue, New Castle, passed away March 31, 2013 at his residence. Born October 19, 1919, in Marisville, PA., he was a son of Walt and Cecelia Allen Whitman.He was preceded in death on March 18, 2009, by his wife of 66 years, Joan Thompson Whitman, whom he married August 1, 1942. Harry was a graduate of Wilmington High School in 1937. He attended Westminster College from 1937-1939 and finished his studies in 1947. He then attended University of Pittsburgh Graduate School receiving his Masters Degree in Geography in 1948. Harry joined the U.S. Navy in 1941, receiving flight training at Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Jacksonville, Florida. He received commission as Ensign in 1941 and was a flight instructor at St. Louis Naval Air Station from 1941-1943. He trained as a combat information officer at Saint Simon Island, Georgia and was a C1C Officer on the U.S.S. Cabot from 1943-1945. During his stay on the Cabot during the Okinawa Campaign, American journalist Ernie Pyle was on board, and was killed shortly after leaving Cabot. In 1950 Harry became a geography teacher at George Washington Junior High School. After retiring from the New Castle School District, he enjoyed traveling with his wife to some of their favorite locations, New Orleans and Virginia Beach. He attended Highland Presbyterian Church. He is survived by one daughter, Jean Shreffler, of New Castle; two brothers and their wives, Kenneth and Pat Whitman of Volant and Don and Janice Whitman of Topeka, KS; and one grandson, Allen Shreffler and his wife, Nain. In addition to his parents and his wife, Joan, he is preceded in death by one son, Larry A. Whitman; one sister, Helen Russo; and four brothers, Edward, Carroll Joe, Vincent and Bob Whitman. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 5, 2013, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A memorial service will follow immediately at 4:00 p.m. and will be officiated by Harry's grandson, Minister Allen Shreffler.
